Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of intentional nursing rounds on patients¡¯ needs and satisfaction.

Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized quasi-experimental design was used. Adult inpatients were recruited from two medical/surgical units at a general hospital in Korea. While the control group (n=37) received standard care, the experimental group (n=39) received structured nursing rounds every two hours during the day and every four hours at night. For data collection, observation logs and self-report questionnaires were used. The collected data were analyzed using Chi-square, independent t-test, paired t-test and repeated measured ANOVA.

Results: As time passed, the frequency of patients¡¯ needs for nursing care was significantly reduced in the experimental group. The significant differences between two groups began to emerge from post-intervention day 4. Patient satisfaction on nursing services was significantly increased in the experimental group. In addition, the mean difference between pretest and posttest was significantly larger in the experimental group than in the control group.

Conclusions: Systematic and purposeful nursing rounds were effective in addressing patients¡¯ basic needs and in improving patient satisfaction with hospital nursing services. However, more research is needed to determine the influence of intentional nursing rounds on patient safety and nurse satisfaction.
